Black Quilted Tote Bag with Monochrome Hibiscus – Upcycled and Handmade

My Black Quilted Hibiscus Bag 🌺

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I have a hard time making solid color bags. I’m such a huge fan of prints and patterns — the louder the better — but as fun as those are, they don’t always go with everything. So I decided it was finally time to make a simple, versatile black bag.

Of course…

I couldn’t leave it too plain.

To give it some texture and interest, I quilted the exterior panels.

That helped, but it still needed a focal point. So I added one of my favorite flowers — a hibiscus — done in a monochromatic style. I absolutely love how it turned out!

The base pattern I used is the QuickStitch Easy Tote from ChrisW Designs . While it’s not technically a free pattern, you can grab it for free by signing up for her newsletter — such a great way to try one of her designs!

The Hibiscus Foundation Paper Piecing pattern I used for the front pocket is available on Etsy from JoeJuneandMae.  Hibiscus Flower Quilt Block: Foundation Paper Piecing Pattern

 Modifications I Made

As usual, I couldn’t resist making a few changes to the original pattern:
  •  The flower block was larger than the pocket size provided, so I simply extended the pocket to the full width of the bag front.
  •  I used purse straps I found at the thrift store for only $2.50 — a total steal!
  •  I added a recessed zipper closure to the top for a more finished and secure design.
  •  Inside, I kept things simple with one slip pocket and one standard zipper pocket.
  •  For structure, I used a plastic cutting board from the dollar store as the base insert and added bag feet for extra protection.

Hardware & Materials

Here’s a quick rundown of what I used:
  •  4 bag feet
  •  1 handmade label
  • 2 rivets on the straps
  •  1 snap
  •  2 zippers
  •  2 ring hooks inside for an optional crossbody strap
Almost everything was upcycled! The outer fabric, lining, and even the straps came from thrifted curtains. I love giving old textiles a new life — it adds character and makes the finished piece feel extra special.

 Final Thoughts

I’m so happy with how this bag turned out — classic black, but still very me. The quilted texture and hibiscus focal point give it personality without sacrificing versatility.

If you’re thinking about making your own tote, I definitely recommend checking out the QuickStitch Easy Tote pattern — it’s simple, adaptable, and a great base for creativity!

Stay tuned for the next projects...

Sewing the Miss Nickel Pants by Sofiona Designs: My Experience

Sewing the Miss Nickel Pants by Sofiona Designs: My Experience

As someone who enjoys a good sewing challenge, I was excited to try the Miss Nickel Pants by Sofiona Designs, a Canadian designer known for well-drafted, stylish patterns. These pants feature a medium-high rise, a zipper fly, and a relaxed, roomy leg, making them a versatile and stylish addition to any wardrobe. Plus, with the option for shorts and multiple pocket styles, the customization possibilities were endless!

Choosing Fabric and Notions

The pattern recommends bottom weight fabrics like brushed twill, lightweight denim, or corduroy with a small percentage of stretch for comfort. I opted for stretch woven 25% stretch, which had just the right amount of structure and flexibility. For the waistband and pocket linings, I used stretch woven, which provided a nice contrast and durability.

Gathering the necessary notions was straightforward. The pattern calls for a 7-9” zipper, buttons or snaps, and fusible interfacing for reinforcement. I chose silver snaps for a polished finish.

Pattern and Instructions

The Miss Nickel pattern is rated as advanced, and I found this to be an accurate assessment. The instructions are well-written, with detailed color photos and hyperlinks that help guide the process. If you’re comfortable sewing pants with a zipper fly, you’ll likely find it a fun and rewarding project. If not, that is what your muslin is for.

One of the standout features is the front pocket design, which sits in a horizontal line across the front rather than a traditional slant. It’s a unique and stylish detail that really elevates the look of these pants.

Sewing Process and Adjustments

The sewing process was enjoyable but definitely required attention to detail. Here are a few things I encountered:

  • Button Fly Installation: This was my first time sewing a button fly, and it had always seemed daunting to attempt. But I 'trusted the process' and followed all of the steps, and it worked out beautifully!

  • Cargo Pockets and Snaps: Another first for me was sewing cargo pockets and adding snaps. Both were easier than expected, thanks to the detailed instructions.

  • Fit Adjustments: For my daughter's pants, I graded from a size 2 waist to a size 6 hip. I didn't make any other changes to the pattern.

  • Pocket Placement: She has the inseam pockets on the front and one cargo pocket on the side, which gives the pants a stylish yet functional look.  I used the medium Pleated Cargo Pocket with flap and snap from the Cargo Pocket Add-on

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m thrilled with how my Miss Nickel Pants turned out! The structured yet comfortable fit, unique pocket details, and professional-looking finish make them a wardrobe staple. While the pattern is best suited for experienced sewists, the detailed instructions and quality drafting make it a fantastic project for anyone looking to level up their sewing skills.

Have you sewn the Miss Nickel Pants? I’d love to hear about your experience! Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried this pattern or if you have any questions about the process.
