As someone who enjoys a good sewing challenge, I was excited to try the Miss Nickel Pants by Sofiona Designs, a Canadian designer known for well-drafted, stylish patterns. These pants feature a medium-high rise, a zipper fly, and a relaxed, roomy leg, making them a versatile and stylish addition to any wardrobe. Plus, with the option for shorts and multiple pocket styles, the customization possibilities were endless!

Choosing Fabric and Notions

The pattern recommends bottom weight fabrics like brushed twill, lightweight denim, or corduroy with a small percentage of stretch for comfort. I opted for stretch woven 25% stretch, which had just the right amount of structure and flexibility. For the waistband and pocket linings, I used stretch woven, which provided a nice contrast and durability.

Gathering the necessary notions was straightforward. The pattern calls for a 7-9” zipper, buttons or snaps, and fusible interfacing for reinforcement. I chose silver snaps for a polished finish.

Pattern and Instructions

The Miss Nickel pattern is rated as advanced, and I found this to be an accurate assessment. The instructions are well-written, with detailed color photos and hyperlinks that help guide the process. If you’re comfortable sewing pants with a zipper fly, you’ll likely find it a fun and rewarding project. If not, that is what your muslin is for.

One of the standout features is the front pocket design, which sits in a horizontal line across the front rather than a traditional slant. It’s a unique and stylish detail that really elevates the look of these pants.

Sewing Process and Adjustments

The sewing process was enjoyable but definitely required attention to detail. Here are a few things I encountered:

• Button Fly Installation: This was my first time sewing a button fly, and it had always seemed daunting to attempt. But I 'trusted the process' and followed all of the steps, and it worked out beautifully!

• Cargo Pockets and Snaps: Another first for me was sewing cargo pockets and adding snaps. Both were easier than expected, thanks to the detailed instructions.

• Fit Adjustments: For my daughter's pants, I graded from a size 2 waist to a size 6 hip. I didn't make any other changes to the pattern.

  

• Pocket Placement: She has the inseam pockets on the front and one cargo pocket on the side, which gives the pants a stylish yet functional look.  I used the medium Pleated Cargo Pocket with flap and snap from the Cargo Pocket Add-on
